There's a Whole Lot of Sowing Going On!

It's that time of year again - but, I seem to be a little behind with my seed sowing.  I can't get myself into gear and get on with it.  You know how it is - I have just come back from holiday and feel all relaxed - now I need to rev up and get cracking.  So - after inspecting everything in the greenhouse to check on progress whilst we have been away - I sowed some more peas (Douce Provence) and broad beans (Aguadulce) and three types of dwarf bean (Rondo, Delinel and Tendergreen).  Only half of the pink flowered broad beans germinated, the rest rotted in the pot, due in part I think to over-enthusiastic watering.

The tomatoes are coming along fine, snug in their mini-greenhouse within the big greenhouse - I still have the Black Russian to sow yet, but I am leaving those for a while so I get a later crop.

And the Anya potatoes are just poking through

How are you getting on with your seed sowing?

  1. I hope that you enjoyed your holiday! It's all looking good and you've done more than me. I'm hoping to start later this week by planting some onions and potatoes, and sowing some broad beans. Flighty xx

  2. I did some dwarf beans Yellow Roquencourt and Masterpiece today. The tomatoes have germinated - all of them with French names but I think one is Black Krim the others have names like Ananas and Peche Jaune and Zebre Verte.
I was much too late last year but wonder if I'm too early this year as they have to go out into the garden. I have no luck with peas.

  3. Well, your tomatoes and beans and potatoes are way ahead of mine. My tomatoes are already suffering from insufficient light and going long and thin. I hope I will be able to bulk them up a bit. And I haven't planted any potatoes just yet. I don't want to risk getting them frosted.

  4. Glad you enjoyed your break hun! Those seeds are looking good. Mine are coming along slowly, been a bit chilly here, even for the mini-greenhouse! Will be blogging about it soon. xx

  5. You make me feel lazy. I've just sown a row of salads, and will put in red onions and carrots later this week (when I can rotovate).

  6. You're way ahead of me. I haven't sown anything in my mini greenhouse yet. Did mange to get some seeds in the ground though. March always surpises me. Shame about your beans. I always have a number of losses for one reason or another x

  10. Hope you had a nice holiday and I'm sure you will be on top of things soon. Your seedlings are looking healthy. I'm running out of space to put more pots/trays of seeds undercover. The weather is cold & overcast again today but many seeds are still germinating. 3 rows of main crop spuds are already showing.

  11. I'm just getting into full sowing mode here Elaine. Your tomatoes look good sturdy plants. I had problems with broad bean germination too with rotting off. Have kept the compost on the dry side but think it was just too early for them. Have just done a second batch. Hanging back with my spuds as I have been caught out by frost before.

  12. I am doing more sowing each week.My tomatoes are well on now, but I did start them very early with a view to keeping then on the kitchen windowsill and hopefully getting an earlier crop.
My sweet peas and cobaea climbers have germinated now and the onion sets have started sending up green shoots.Carrot and spinach have been sown and potatoes planted.I feel like I am doing ok.I will never grow as many things as you, we dont have the room but I am enjoying it and thats the main thing.

  18. You are way ahead of me, so don't fret. I can't put out my tender annuals until the end of may so my seeds are just sprouting. I love your greenhouse

  19. I too am late 'seeding up' this year. Trying lots of experiments & rule-breaking with instructions. Wish I had the space for a greenhouse...I've been using my sons pool-table as my potting area!! xx

  20. Hope you had a great holiday, Elaine. I've done one batch of sowing but need to do loads more, normally I'm a bit ahead of myself but this year I think I've relaxed too much and now I'm behind. But still got plenty of time. Another sowing session tonight I think.
