The Summer Pudding Garden

Now that the Blackcurrants have finally ripened it may be time to think of Summer Pudding.  I have been freezing punnets of Redcurrants, Raspberries and Strawberries - so my garden has yielded all the ingredients that I need (except for the bread of course).  I would quite like to add a Whitecurrant bush to the mix as I have heard that the fruit is a little sweeter and if I wait for a few weeks I could add Blackberries, but then it would be Autumn Pudding rather than Summer.

I have spent the last two days picking Redcurrants which look glorious shining from the bushes in the sun - it's a messy job but someone has to do it.  A few pots of Redcurrant Jelly a few pots of Blackcurrant Jam and one or two with all the berries mixed together, and if there are any berries left over, maybe a bottle or two of cordial.

This year I have an overabundance of small fruits, last year, except for gooseberries, I had nothing - so I am determined to make the most of natures' bounty with foods to remember this hot summer by in the depths of winter.















Have you grown all the fruits needed for a Summer Pudding this year - as long as it isn't too tart and there is plenty of fresh cream to go with it, what could be nicer on a hot summers' day.

  1. I've wanted to make summer pudding for ages, but never seemed to remember at the right time, only when looking through garden cookbooks in the cooler months. This is a great reminder!! Thank you.

    Our white currants are sweeter than the red, but not as many berries I find, and smaller as well..but they are my favourite. Give them a try.

  6. Mmmmmm - looks delicious Elaine and one of my favourite puds. I've been picking currants at the allotment but the white currants are still not quite ready for picking whilst the red currants are gone.

  7. I was going to make a summer pudding the other day and was distracted. I never fancied it at one time as I thought that it would taste like a fruit sandwich but really you can't tell it is made from bread can you?

    1. The first time I made one I forgot to put sugar in - it was so tart it made my hair stand on end.

  8. Beautiful berries,Elaine. Wish mine would ripen at the same time, seems there is a half dozen a day,so they get eaten straight from the bush !

  9. Our redcurrants are over now, but we had a wonderful crop. Having meticulously sorted and cleaned them, I just mixed them with Yoghurt and a little sugar, and popped them in the freezer for an hour. Not wonderful, but good.

  10. I love the way your have displayed the fruits in terracotta pots! Sue's comment above made me smile. The first time I made a summer pudding, I got a bit carried away with drinking the juice from the pan. The next day, I proudly produced what can only be described as a fruit sandwich. Twenty years on, it is still firmly in the memory of any poor soul who politely waded through it. I now know not to eat the ingredients while cooking. Ahem.

  11. We don't make summer puddings here. But I did collect all the fruits(currants, raspberries, blackberries) and will make syrup and jam.

  16. oh my goodness, I had no idea what summer pudding was, but when I saw that photo. That looks delicious! good reason to start growing all that fruit.

  17. That pud looks amazing - I only have three currant bushes, so I suspect the fruit will always be just scoffed raw, but that does look tempting... Maybe one year...
