Tempting Tomatoes
For me the tomato season is nearly over. I sowed four different types; Gardeners' Delight, Tigerella, Consteluto Fiorentino and Sungold. The Sungold were planted outside and are a vigorous cherry type, and in my mind, the best-tasting tomato of all. They are still going strong, despite the cold and windy weather. The Gardeners' Delight ripened very quickly in the greenhouse and have now finished. Can't quite believe I won't be picking any more. I have frozen a good few kilos ready to make sauces and soups for the winter. The Tigerella which are a medium sized tomato with paler stripes are just about hanging on with a few more to ripen and the Consteluto, which are a beefsteak type have finished completely. I know other people who are still waiting for their tomatoes to ripen, so I can't quite understand why mine have come and gone so quickly. I shall miss going into the greenhouse and picking fruit warm from the vine and feasting on them straightaway. Guess I will just have to wait till next year now.

Lucky you, for many people it has hardy started, and I've had just two of my Gardener's Delight so far! As I grow mine outside I might try Sungold next year in view of your comments. Flighty xx
ReplyDeleteSomehow those Costoluto Fiorentino tomatoes have more appeal than the smooth-skinned regular types we are most often presented with - even if they are more difficult to prepare! All my tomatoes are grown outside in pots, and the fruits of most of them are only just beginning to be ripe. I am very fond of a variety called "Maskotka" which I strongly recommend. Tigerella is a good one too; I bet you enjoyed that one. It has a great flavour.
ReplyDeleteOur Tommies are in full flow and we're harvesting daily. It's been a good tomato year for us :)
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting. Loads of Cherriettes on my bush tomatoes but hardly "on Fire" yet! However, some pleasing plum tomatoes forming on my balcony and the other two are also doing really well. Only eaten two though so far!
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to feel a little guilty with the success of my tomatoes, when some of you haven't started harvesting yet. I expect I will be laughing on the other side of my face when you are still tucking in and I am back to shop-bought ones.
